Outcome of my salon entries – Month of November 2013

And so we are closing down 2013. Just one more month of salon results after this edition. I had some mixed results in the month of November 2013 re: photography salon entries. Luckily I did not have a salon with a zero acceptance rate this month.

Total number of salons entered:

12 (2 national salon and 10 international salons).

Overall outcome:

International: 60 acceptances from 160 photos entered = 38% acceptance rate (decreased from the 45% last month)

National: 18 acceptances from 36 photos entered = 50% acceptance rate (increased from the 38% last month)

Medals: 6

COMs: 4

Now for the individual salons:

A. International salons:

1. 1st Experience Circular exhibition 2013 (Serbia):

This was a 3 salon circuit.

Photos entered: 4 photos each in the Nature, Free colour, Free monochrome, Travel and Photojournalism sections = 60 entries.

Acceptance: Only 10 acceptances (6% acceptance rate)

Comments: 7 of the 10 acceptances were in the nature division. Goshawk flying 1 received acceptances in two of the salons.

2. 2nd Exposure International Salon of projected images 2013 (India):

Acceptance: 3 acceptances (75% acceptance rate)

Comments: Oyster catcher flying 1 received its first acceptance. See my comment below regarding these photos of the Oyster catchers.

3. Moment International exhibition of Art Photography 2013 (Macedonia):

Photos entered: 4 photos each in the Nature, Movement and People sections = 12 entries.

Acceptance: 5 acceptances (42% acceptance rate)

Comments: Three acceptances in the Nature section with Oyster catcher taking off 1 being one of them. Yet another of those images that I am not sure about – the sun was already too high resulting in very hard light. Also I did make an emotional decision to enter the image just because it was so difficult to proper shots of these Oyster catchers.

9. Wrekin Salon of Photography 2013 (England)

Photos entered: 4 photos in the Nature section.

Acceptance: 3 acceptances (75% acceptance rate)

Comments:  Lion mating 4 was one of the two images that received an acceptance this salon. Interesting to note is that my lion mating photos are not doing that well in photography salon. Just an observation as one does not often get the opportunity to get clear shots of lions mating so close to the road.

10. Between the Sky and the Earth 5th International salon of photography 2013 (Slovenia)

Photos entered: 4 photos in the Nature section.

Acceptance: 3 acceptances (75% acceptance rate)

Comments: This is the third time I’ve entered this salon – the first being my second salon ever entered in the beginning of 2012. So I am a bit nostalgic about this salon. And the salon did not disappoint me.  The Vulture and the Jackal 3 won the UPI Gold medal in the Nature division of the salon. The interaction between the vultures and the jackals at the hide in the Drakensberg provides the photography with unique photography opportunities. You just need to be patient and “lucky”.

Message to take home:

Just a short message today as I was reflecting on my photography in 2013: Be prepared. Don’t let bad preparation spoil your chances of getting the shot. This is even true in wildlife photography because a wildlife photographer should not just rely on luck to get the perfect shot. One should be prepared – mentally and with your equipment ready at the right settings.

Until the next month keep on shooting!!!
